a grey knive lurking on the corner of the bathroom counter, incongruously balanced on the edge - just about to fall - the light of day leaked into the room like dish detergent being squeezed gently out of a bottle, and over in the corner, rats rustled in a paper bag. he walked into the room to the sound of the ceiling fan slowly misunderstood. his left sneaker squeaked slightly. paper in his pocket crumpled up and a blue crayon behind one ear. a muddy cigarette in one hand and no lighter. his eyes are silently stained-glass windows inside a church with no congregation, waiting for the hollow bellpulls - the doorbell of the Almighty. he takes out a sharpie and marks an x on the wall. moments later a fly buzzes fatly in and lands on the spot, preening and humming to itself. below, at the baseboard, an ant trundles in. he looks at the mirror. he looks away. outside, a bird hits the window, and all things still, in hushedmourning. an ignorant cricket looses a selfish mating call and

the night tasted like fruit and we bit into it

 today is passover.

the temperature has dropped down to the higher twenties, with the cold front that stomped through here like a whiny little child last night. i have washed, done calisthenics, and shaved already, and it's seven a.m. last night around eleven Sleep slapped me in the face and said "go to sleep." so i dutifully did, waking up at six to talk to jason some, and then just .. sort of ... stay up.

room selection last night, too. all of us in a big milling line (that i gracefully cut right to the front of because i'm a bastard like that) and finally sitting down. corey and i were first in line with 137 priority points for our coveted double-with-three-fuckoff-windows on fourth floor. jason and nate were right behind us with 135 points, and they wanted the room directly across from us. we have the fire marshal on one side, and the RA on the other side. it'll be a good year. the quad girls minus amy (being jill, casey, and erin, are living two floors directly below corey and i. maybe we'll rig up a pulley system, haha.

and the summer plans are quickly developing. it looks like i'll be staying on campus up here - not taking classes, but working, and being in a nearer proximity to friends, etc. the summer won't be so drudgery-laden this time - and hell, i don't even usually mind it that much at home. but i think i'd like to see what it's like to live on my own for awhile. (god willing i have a single and not some random roommate)

and springtime. oh holy time of year. a few nights ago, basketball in the courts. violent pounding of mostly bare feet against the asphalt court, mark's agile and basketball-trained body a fleeting gray shadow against the night, the bright lights from the direction of the theatre - sarah mawn in second command, nimble with the ball and a powerhouse of energy. jason was the ferret of the court, and casey turned out to be quite the adversary. i elbowed anthony in the head by accident. minor injuries sustained - and then a trip to denny's, which was good.

there were hordes of people outside that night. cars lined up in front of robie, hazards blinking, picnic blankets laid out, frisbees hawked across the lawn. the sky was that deep cerulean tint, that speaks of night but reminds of dawn - i kept waiting for my grandmother to show up with a bowl of marshmallows. or for fireworks to explode in the firmament. to smell a barbeque, or something. a beautiful, incredible night.

and now for the next week, the late April showers will reign, or so forecasts the weather channel - with possible thunderstorms on tuesday, which would gladden my heart. gladden. oh jesus.

and so.

pst. a new poem!
